When Dave and I first got married in July of 2-thousand-ought-5, we had some growing pains. He was trying to get a new business off the ground and working nonstop. I was awaiting teaching certification and working as a waitress in a wine bar. I was a metric peg in an imperial-sized hole.
September '06 was approaching and I still didn't have my teaching cert in hand, so I decided to go back up to Canada to substitute teach (where I could earn 3x what I was making in the States).
Of course, my teaching cert arrived while I was en route, somewhere along I81, I'm sure. But, I was already on my way, so I figured I'd follow through with the plan, teach for a couple of weeks, roam around the streets of Toronto, then come back to my new home.
During those two weeks, I fell in love with a grade 1-2 Autism Transition program that really needed a teacher for a couple of months. I told them that if they didn't find anyone more qualified than me, then I'd take the position. They didn't, so I did.
Meanwhile, Dave and I had some work to do to figure out how and if we would make a life together in his little bachelor apt. I wrote this song on the plane on the way back to NJ when winter break began and have been home with him ever since.

Home for Good (2006)
Oh, lonesome night, G
The stars are brightly shining. G D
My dear, we’re still divining D C/G
The secrets of this life. C/G G
And in your hands, my heart beats G
Ever steady G D
The distance not so heavy D C/G
Our testament revived. G
When the snow falls deep, C D
I’ll be at your feet, G C
To say I’m home for good. C D G
When the new year breaks, C D
It’s a promise made, G C/G
My dear, I’m home to stay. C/G D G
