I wrote this song when my dad was really sick in Canada, one of the many times we didn't think he would make it (until he finally didn't). I was stuck down in New Jersey waiting for immigration paperwork that would allow me to travel. I sat down in front of the piano and imagined how my dad might have been feeling as he faced his mortality. I was reminded of something I read about Woody Guthrie on his death bed -- to this day I can't find it, but I'm certain I didn't dream it. He was dying of tuberculosis and once he got to the point where he couldn't talk, let alone sing, he kept on writing. And there are songs, some of which, Wilco and Billy Bragg bring to life in Mermaid Avenue, that he only penned but never played. On the days approaching his death there a few pages on which the words,"Oh my god" are repeated over and over again. Again, I don't think I made this up, but if I did, it's a great story.
My beautiful friend Jen Brace sings with me on this one. You get a taste of how other-wordly her voice is on the very last word of the song. But again, that's just a taste. She truly is one of the most gifted musicians I know. And a gorgeous soul to boot.
